The lifters themselves are showing signs of wear, which is more likely to be the case on older cars. If your lifters start acting up, the ticking noise might not even be noticeable at first. hi brian, the lifters are brand new harley lifters. i put them in when i put in an ev 27 cam. the bike was making this noise prior to the cam, but not as loud. i changed the cam because the cam bearing went bad.( whining) all the needle rollers wear still in the bad bearing also. thanks for the quick reply. &nbs p; p.s., Typically, on a Harley, the bearing that supports the roller at the bottom of the lifter fails. The 4-speed ones were kinda sucky (had a couple of them fail) and the early 5-speed ones weren't great. But then H-D went to a large axle one for 5-speeds and those seem much better. Listen to the engine run. Loud banging, knocking or tapping noises may be a sign of a bad lifter. Noises are typically caused by worn out lifters coming into contact with other engine components or a lack of lubrication. Take the vehicle to a mechanic and have it formally diagnosed.
